GET IN LINE… AND TAKE YOUR TROPHY

If we are working for the trophy, the end of our path is going to feel empty.

PRESS THE GAS. PRESS THE BRAKE.

Slamming either of those pedals on your vehicle will not serve you well. The speeding up and screeching to a halt is uncomfortable for the driver and passenger, and it isn’t healthy for the vehicle either.  

THE BATTLE OF CONFIDENCE VS EGO

Confidence comes from our internal belief in ourselves. This can be built every time we do what we say we are going to do. Every commitment to ourselves that we keep, we build our self-confidence. This quality is completely internal. Our self-confidence can’t be taken away by anyone, and external validation or recognition is unnecessary to build it.

A NOD TO THE PARENT

…there’s a reason why teachers typically have 4 or 5 years of education. That isn’t just to learn subjects that they are going to teach. In fact most of that time isn’t learning subjects. It is learning to understand children, how to develop children, quite honestly how to deal with children.

A VACATION IS NOT WHAT YOU NEED

If we get to a place that we feel we really need a “vacation” from work, it may be a sign that we have stopped living an integrated life or that the work we do has begun to encroach on life itself.  Perhaps we have not given enough time or importance to our Personal Relationships or our Health or our Spirituality. Any one of those, or perhaps all three, are screaming for attention.

ZOOM IN. ZOOM OUT.

Extreme focus can pull us away from living experientially.  Extreme focus can also be linked to negativity.  Perhaps that has everything to do with the adjective we attach - extreme.  

2020 MATH: ADDITION BY SUBTRACTION

Over the past few months I’ve found myself being a science teacher, a history teacher, a Spanish teacher, and after today I’ll certainly be fired as a math teacher. Because today I propose that 2 + 1 = 1 and 2 - 1 = 3.

“THAT’S NOT FAIR!”

In life when things don’t go the way we expect, the way we want, or the way we would design it, somewhere we have this trigger that pulls out the “that’s not fair” card. 

LOSE INTEREST. FIND COMMITMENT.

…interest can either grow or wane.  We’ve all dated that person that became more and more interesting as time went on.  And we have all dated that person that we lost interest in.  Our goals can be just like dating.

NO FALSE EMERGENCIES

What do we allow to be emergencies in our life? Perhaps more important, what do we individually define as an emergency? The true definition of the word emergency is a “serious, unexpected, and dangerous situation requiring immediate action”.

THE SECRET IN-BETWEEN THE PAST AND THE FUTURE

Our minds wander to the past for regret. Our minds wander to the future to plan.

KEEP ON FILLING. YOU WON'T GET FULL.

We are often searching for jobs, careers, relationships that fulfill us. Or maybe we feel we found that. We tell ourselves that we go to bed each day fulfilled. But what does that mean?

GO SPEND TIME

As a New Yorker, I often heard the expression “time is money.”  It’s easy to buy into that and make sure every minute of every day is accounted for. The fallacy however lies in the fact that that expression is an equation. It means that time is equal to money.  When in reality it isn’t.

VERY LITTLE

We need very little to survive. We need very little to be happy. We need very little to live experientially.

BRING THE BOAT IN

Leadership is bringing people down a path to their preferred future. As you jumped into the rough water and began bringing the boat in, the unexpected happened.  

“YOU HAVEN’T CHANGED A BIT!”

Unless we have a picture from the past to compare to our present, it will be difficult to know if we are different. Change needs to be detected so that change can be controlled.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A YAK SHAVER

I came across an expression this week while reading that I had not heard before... “Shaving a yak” was meant to relate to doing a bunch of tasks, or many hours of work, that really didn't contribute to what you set out to do that day.
